Enrolling in private schools is becoming an increasingly popular form of education within the UK. Whilst being educated before the age of eighteen, you’ll encounter a choice between private or state schools.

What are Private Schools?

Private Schools, otherwise known as Independent or Public Schools, are fee-paying schools in the UK. These schools are independent of various regulations, which are applicable to state funded schools and are run by an elected board of governors however, they must be registered with the government. Within the UK there are approximately over 2,500 private schools, which are all inspected by Ofsted, a regulatory Office for Standards In Education, Children’s services and Skills. Pupils do not have to follow the national curriculum however, they do take part in state examinations. Scholarships and bursaries may be offered depending on each individual situation.

Having a private education comes with a number of advantages. Often private schools attain high academic standards and notable examination results. There is also said to be sound discipline at private schools where the focus is on the care and development of the individual as well as preserving a community. Classes are often smaller and attentions to individual needs are taken; on average the student-teacher ratio is 17:1 in state schools and 9:1 in private schools. Additionally, due to greater access to larger facilities, private schools are often considered to offer a wider range of extra-curricular activities. There are a larger amount of high degrees of specialization providing greater expertise in various fields.

These schools help to provide diversity as well. Private schools aim to foster a child’s learning environment whilst encouraging and developing a child’s talents. This is done by offering special tuition especially to those, whose first language is not English. Furthermore, guardianship arrangements are available for those whose families are not living within the UK.
